Over 300 LEGO sets leave the catalog at the end of 2026: what retirement really does to prices
On September 14, HelloBricks publishes 14 "soon-to-be-retired" sets. On the 16th, Stonewars counts more than 300. In between: 48 hours, about 200 additions, and still no date. The real question isn't "which to buy before it disappears", it's "what does retirement actually change about prices?" We measured, across 2,081 sets.

Timeline: on September 14, HelloBricks relays a selection of 14 big sets. On the 15th and 16th, about 200 more sets get a "last chance" label in stores (Stonewars, updated September 16, 5:41 pm). Total: over 300 references, including 27 exclusive or partly exclusive sets, and play themes (Classic, One Piece, Friends, Jurassic World, Dreamzzz) as well as big adult sets. No contradiction between the two sources: a selection announced as such, then a counter. The fourteen selected sets are under 5% of the total.

No date
HelloBricks: "no exact release date, they won't stop being available right on December 31, 2026. It could happen before or after." The right wording is therefore: end of production announced, availability date unknown. We never write "retired on December 31", and we don't reuse the end-of-life date shown by databases, which is a year-end placeholder.
The measure: retired versus on shelf
For LEGO sets with at least 5 new sales, we computed the gap between the average sale (BrickLink Europe, euros) and the LEGO price, for two groups: sets whose end-of-life date has passed ("retired"), and sets still in the catalog ("on shelf"). We publish the median and quartiles, never the mean: three Millennium Falcons would be enough to shift a mean and manufacture a false headline.
| Group | Sets | 25% of sets below | Median | 25% of sets above | Width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| On shelf | 304 | −35,8 % | −28,3 % | −18,2 % | 17,6 pts |
| Retired | 1 777 | −22,6 % | −1,4 % | +37,6 % | 60,2 pts |
Two readings. First, sets still on the shelf resell at a median 28.3% under the LEGO price: the ordinary situation of a new set on the secondary market. Second — and this is the point — the width between the first and third quartile goes from 17.6 points to 60.2 points: 3.4 times wider. The retired median (−1.4%) is higher, but a quarter of those sets still sell more than 22.6% under their price, and a quarter above +37.6%. Retirement doesn't lift prices: it spreads them out.
Limits: these are two different groups of sets, not the before-and-after of one set. LEGO prices are nominal (no inflation adjustment, which mechanically favors older sets). No forecast: we describe the past.
How we measured
- 2,081 sets with at least 5 new sales (304 on shelf, 1,777 retired), BrickLink Europe, euros, readings from August-September 2026.
- "Retired" = end-of-life date passed at calculation time, not the catalog's binary flag, known to be unreliable.
My take
"It's being retired soon, so it'll go up" is the most repeated sentence in the hobby and one of the least measured. The figures neither confirm nor refute it: they show retirement opens the fan. Some retired sets sell far above their price, others far below, and belonging to the "retired" group doesn't say which will be which. I'd rather have a collection whose real market value I know than a retirement list I read while hoping.
